To Kill a Mockingbird

Genre: Coming of age, classic fiction and crime.
Audience: Young adult.

In the wake of George Floyd’s murder and the global Black Lives Matter protests, I reimagined a cover concept that foregrounds the racial injustice at the heart of To Kill a Mockingbird. Rather than relying on the familiar mockingbird symbology, I chose to center Tom Robinson — positioning him as the emotional and moral focal point of the composition.

Tom is portrayed with a pensive, almost pleading expression, placed beside the lifeless bird to underscore the tragedy and moral complexity of his fate within the Jim Crow South. A youthful title font reflects Scout’s narrative voice, while bold, gestural background strokes (arranged in evocative colors) suggesting the presence of the confederate flag, alluding to the charged racial landscape of the Deep South where the story unfolds.

This project serves as a creative exploration to showcase my artistic abilities.
