13 Reasons Why
Genre: Young adult and coming of age.
Audience: Young adult: teens – adult, particularly women.
From researching fan art, Netflix’s advertising and reading the book, I decided to illustrate 13 Reasons Why’s strongest thematic symbols in a style befitting to a YA book.
As the tapes were the strongest symbol used in the aforementioned research, I also used them as my main imagery were each tape, introduces a new character and compounds Hannah’s journey and her subsequent decisions so I illustrated them as a domino effect, falling on top of one another.
The front cover focuses on Clay’s tape (no. 9) because he is the story’s main narrator whilst in the background, he’s shown following Hannah’s map (coordinates) to pinnacle places within the story. Red pins are also used to represent the coordinates as they’d be easily recognised by younger readers (ie Google Maps).
This project is a creative concept to illustrate my creative skills.
